The Queensland Government has continued their ban of gender-affirming care for transgender young people seeking treatment through Queensland’s public healthcare system.

On Tuesday 6 January 2026 a legal challenge was filed in the Queensland’s Supreme Court by a transgender young person to overturn this ban. They said:

“To have our medical decisions (made after years of consultation with specialists, therapists and family) overturned by a political agenda is shameful and crosses a multitude of boundaries of human rights.”

Let’s get behind all trans young people, and get this ban overturned! Young people Accordion Title deserve a healthcare system that supports them to grow up healthy, happy and with the freedom to be themselves.

Background

The Queensland Government has released the Vine Review and is citing its findings as the basis for continuing restrictions on access to puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormone treatment for young people under the age of 18. Under the current direction, these treatments will remain unavailable through the public system until at least 2031, when outcomes from a major clinical study underway in the United Kingdom are expected to be published.

The full Vine Review is publicly available via the Queensland Government’s Ministerial Media Statements.

Transcend Australia is closely examining both the review and the Government’s decision-making process. Our team is undertaking a thorough assessment of the implications for trans and gender-diverse young people and their families. We are preparing a detailed organisational response and will outline our advocacy priorities and next steps in 2026.
