We’re thrilled to introduce four incredible people who’ve recently joined the Transcend Australia Board — Katy Stevens, Kathy Richards, Carol Nichols and Zara Mulan. Each brings a unique blend of lived experience, professional expertise and deep commitment to supporting trans, gender diverse and non-binary young people and their families.
Katy Stevens (she/her)
“Learning never ends.” — Katy Stevens

What inspired you to join Transcend’s Board, and what do you hope to contribute?
Transcend provided critical support and evidence-based resources to my family when we needed them most. I want to help Transcend reach more families, so every child receives the love and support they deserve to live rich, fulfilling lives.
What message of encouragement would you share with families or young people?
Learning never ends. We all can learn new ways of loving, supporting and understanding one another. Being willing to keep trying — even when it’s hard — is everything.
Kathy Richards (she/her)
“You are not alone.” — Kathy Richards

What inspired you to join Transcend’s Board, and what do you hope to contribute?
As a parent raising a transgender teen, my family has been deeply supported by Transcend’s care, resources and community. Having worked with not-for-profit boards for many years, I know how good governance underpins great impact. Joining the Board gives me the chance to give back and use my experience to strengthen Transcend’s ongoing work.
What message of encouragement would you share with families or young people?
Four years ago, we thought we were alone — then I found Transcend. To every family and every trans, gender diverse or non-binary young person: you are not alone. A community is here for you, ready with love, support and solidarity.
Carol Nichols (she/her)
“From frightened to fabulous.” — Carol Nichols

What inspired you to join Transcend’s Board, and what do you hope to contribute?
Transcend supported my family when we were in crisis — their work is truly lifesaving. Finding community and guidance made all the difference. When the chance arose to give back, I jumped at it. I’m proud to be part of an organisation so vital to families like mine, and I hope to help others move from frightened to fabulous.
What message of encouragement would you share with families or young people?
These are challenging times, and our young people need our strength and solidarity more than ever. I’m heartened by how many young Australians are standing with us, championing love, health and happiness. While times can feel tough, generational change is happening — and a bright future awaits.
Zara Mulan (she/her)
“You are loved, vital and necessary.” — Zara Mulan

What inspired you to join Transcend’s Board, and what do you hope to contribute?
There are so many loving and empathetic people ready to support transgender and non-binary children — but many have never had to deeply consider gender, and don’t yet know how to turn their empathy into meaningful action. Transcend helps guide and empower that love into real impact.
I hope to contribute both lived experience and my knowledge of law and compliance, ensuring Transcend can continue its incredible work without administrative barriers.
What message of encouragement would you share with families or young people?
You are loved, vital and necessary. It can feel like no one truly understands you, but your presence — and Transcend’s existence — are proof that you are surrounded by love. It may be imperfect or hard to find at times, but it’s out there, looking for ways to support you.
We’re so grateful to our Board members — past and present — who volunteer their time and expertise to help Transcend Australia grow stronger every year.
