Healthcare Is a Human Right: Standing With Trans Young People in Queensland

Thrive & Flourish

The continuation of Queensland’s ban on gender-affirming healthcare for trans young people is a deeply harmful and politically motivated decision. It disregards evidence, undermines clinical expertise, and places already vulnerable families under even greater strain.

But what we also know—without question—is this: trans and gender diverse children and young people are wonderful, deserving people. Their families love them fiercely, and they will not stop fighting for the care their children need and deserve.

What has happened

The Vine Review has now been made public and is being used by the Queensland LNP Government to justify extending the ban on access to puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones for people under 18. Under this decision, the ban will remain in place until 2031, when results from a UK trial are expected to be available.

You can read the Vine Review here: Independent Review into puberty blockers released – Ministerial Media Statements

Transcend Australia is currently undertaking a detailed analysis of the report and the government’s decision. We are developing a comprehensive response and will share our findings and advocacy priorities in 2026.

Why this decision is harmful

This decision is profoundly damaging. It:

  • Undermines current clinical guidelines
  • Ignores principles of person-centred, family-centred care
  • Disregards the best available evidence
  • Misrepresents the findings of the Vine Review and previous independent reviews

When reversible puberty suppression remains available in Queensland for other young people, but is denied solely to trans and gender diverse young people, it becomes clear that these restrictions are not based on evidence or clinical need. While gender-affirming care has evidence base comparable to many other areas of paediatric healthcare, trans healthcare continues to face disproportionate scrutiny and political interference.

Healthcare is a human right

Access to healthcare—including gender-affirming care—is a fundamental human right.

Healthcare decisions belong with young people, their families, and their medical teams—not politicians. Every child and young person deserves dignity, compassion, and access to evidence-based, person-centred care.

We are with you

Transcend Australia stands with trans and gender diverse young people and their families—advocating for change.

We will continue to:

  • Advocate for access to gender-affirming healthcare
  • Challenge misinformation and political interference
  • Provide trusted, evidence-based resources, peer support and connection
  • Provide peer support and family connections.
  • Centre the voices of trans young people and their families

You are not alone.
