Sunshine Coast, QLD – A local parent’s passion for connection has led to a heartwarming and empoweringcommunity event thanks to Transcend Australia’s Community Grants.
Hosted on the Sunshine Coast, the “Pamper Day for Trans and Non-Binary Youth” provided young people with a safe, celebratory space to explore fashion, makeup, and hair styling. The day also offered parents a chance to connect and celebrate their children.
“What I really wanted was to give these young people a place to shine, and help families find joy and support together.”
This is the third event organised by the grant recipient, whose grassroots initiative began with a simple coffee chat group formed through Transcend Australia’s Knowledge Hub.
“It’s grown so much. Our group now has over 15 families, and the kids have formed real friendships—they go op shopping and catch up regularly.”
Thanks to the Transcend Community Grant, the costs and promotion of the event was covered. Originally funded by general donations, the grants expanded in 2024 through GiveOUT Day donations —enabling Transcend to reach more people and grow the program.
“Having a trusted name like Transcend behind the event really helped people feel safe to attend. Plus, the funding made it possible to add those little extras that made the day special.”
Families travelled from near and far to attend—including one parent and daughter duo, made the 6-hour journey from out west.
One parent shared, “Just showing up was a huge win for my child, who suffers high social anxiety—especially since the QLD paused gender affirming care for under 18s. For them to even see other trans kids from the coast was powerful. As a parent, connecting with others helped more than I can put into words.”
Our local parent’s message to anyone considering hosting their own event?
“Do it—it’s incredibly rewarding. Get others involved and start promoting early!”
