I am thrilled to be appointed as Transcend Australia’s inaugural Executive Officer. It is an honour to join Transcend Australia and to build upon the strong legacy created by the families who have been holding this work for many years. I would like to particularly thank Rebekah Robertson OAM, the founder of Transcend Australia for entrusting me with this great responsibility to lead this organisation into the future. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this national support network to protect trans, gender diverse and non-binary children. I look forward to meeting the wonderful children, young people, families, carers and wider communities across Australia whom are connected to Transcend. As a father of 9 year old twins, I share a deep understanding of the importance of supporting children to thrive with joy and the right to experience a future full of bright possibilities.
I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners across the lands where Transcend Australia operates and pay my respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their elders past and present and to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families within our networks, including our Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities. I recognise that family structures are diverse, including blended families, co-parents, rainbow families, step parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, grandparents, extended family members, carers and guardians. I recognise that many families in our Transcend Australia networks experience multiple diversities, including race, faith, cultural diversity and people of all abilities. It is my hope as Executive Officer of Transcend Australia that we continue to be the safe and supportive organisation who provides your family with the support and information you may require for your child to grow and thrive.
Throughout my career, I have led the development of multiple health services and programs for trans, gender diverse and non-binary communities. I have always been committed to developing programs with the communities they aim to serve and this is a principle of co-design I will embed into Transcend Australia’s programmatic work. I currently serve as Co-Chair of the Victorian Government’s Trans and Gender Diverse Expert Advisory Group and have recently established the Victorian Trans and Gender Diverse Community Health Service, with two new multi disciplinary clinics in metropolitan and regional Victoria. I have extensive experience developing peer led support programs and as a Youth Worker, I am dedicated to upholding the rights and voices of young people. I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2016, to travel the world and investigate best practice models of healthcare for trans, gender diverse and non-binary people. My research had a particular focus on the importance of employing people with lived experience to work in services and programs. I believe our communities and families hold a valuable amount of knowledge and skill and together we can progress Transcend Australia’s vision, to ensure that trans, gender diverse and non-binary children are embraced and given every opportunity to thrive and flourish.
As I start in the role, I will be focused on listening to people, building trust with our families and young people and getting a clear understanding of what the priorities and issues are across Australia, in each state and territory. I will work with the Transcend Australia board to establish good governance processes and build an organisational culture that is congruent with the values in our strategic plan. Kindness and authenticity, collaboration and partnership, integrity and justice.
My aim will be to strengthen sustainability through collaboration and partnerships with national and state based organisations who are equally committed to improving the lives and wellbeing of trans, gender diverse and non binary children and young people. I look forward to working with the many advocates, leaders and organisations across Australia to improve services and systems. I will also be focused on developing our ambassador and leadership program with and for young people, which will amplify the voices of young people and support a new generation of emerging leaders.
I look forward to starting in the role and working together with our families and young people and all our valued stakeholders, organisations, leaders and governments to work towards our organisational aim to become Australia’s trusted source of accurate, evidence based information and support for parents, carers and families of trans, gender diverse and non-binary young people.
I hope you will join me with this important mission, to protect trans kids. I look forward to working
